♻️ KPI students have received the “Green Energy Oscar” for the Best Green Energy Transformation Project of 2025. The 100 gREen AWARD-2025 from Global 100 RE Ukraine was awarded to the new educational program “Energy-Efficient Equipment for Biofuel and Hydrogen Technologies” of the Educational and Research Institute of Energy Saving and Energy Management at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (ER IEE).

This distinction by Global 100 RE Ukraine is awarded annually to the most promising green transformation projects in Ukraine, with the ambitious goal that by 2070 all energy produced in Ukraine will come from renewable sources, including hydrogen as an ideal fuel and various types of biofuels.

🏆 The award was received by the program guarantor — Associate Professor of the Department of Automation of Electrical and Mechatronic Complexes at ER IEE, Leonid Listovshchyk.

✅ Experts recognized the KPI case as an example of modern engineering education that directly contributes to the country’s energy independence and energy security, combining education and research with real market needs.

📃 What makes this program unique:
📌 it trains engineers capable of designing and maintaining systems based on biofuels and hydrogen as alternative energy sources;
📌 it focuses on the biofuel and hydrogen sectors — areas currently experiencing the greatest workforce shortages;

ℹ️ Following the launch of the bachelor’s program in 2025, Kyiv Polytechnic is already preparing to introduce a master’s program in energy-efficient systems engineering.

An interdisciplinary team of researchers from the University of New South Wales, led by Dr. Quentin Meyer and Professor Chuan Zhao, has achieved a technological breakthrough that could significantly accelerate the transition to clean energy.

The researchers reengineered the architecture of hydrogen fuel cells, eliminating a key issue—water accumulation, which previously hindered oxygen flow and reduced system efficiency.

Traditionally, removing the reaction byproduct—water—required complex and energy-intensive solutions that increased the weight and cost of the systems. Australian scientists applied high-precision microengineering approaches by integrating microchannels 100 micrometers (0.1 mm) wide into the cell structure, separated by ribs of the same size. These “bypass channels” enable efficient removal of excess water and gases, preventing their buildup inside.

The results, published in the journal Applied Catalysis B: Environment and Energy, demonstrate a significant improvement: the upgraded fuel cell delivers 75% more power compared to conventional designs. At the same time, the structure has become lighter and more cost-effective, as it relies less on expensive platinum and no longer requires additional pumps or separators.

According to the authors, this technology opens up prospects for implementing hydrogen energy in sectors where battery systems are inefficient due to their weight. The primary focus is on aviation, particularly low-altitude aircraft, as well as heavy-duty transport.

The development has already been patented, and the team is currently working on scaling the technology for industrial production, bringing the era of affordable and completely clean energy closer.

Digital Twin is one of the most important technologies of Industry 4.0, which is transforming approaches to the design, control and technical diagnostics of electrical and mechatronic systems. In essence, a digital twin is a highly accurate digital copy of a real object or process that operates in real time and reflects the actual state of the physical system. This approach allows engineers to analyze equipment behavior, predict failures, optimize operating modes and make informed decisions based on data.

Modern digital twins combine mathematical models, data from IoT sensors, artificial intelligence algorithms and cloud technologies. Thanks to this, the digital twin becomes not just a simulation, but a full-fledged cyber-physical system that synchronizes with a real object in real time. This opens up opportunities for in-depth analysis, testing and optimization without risk to equipment, which is especially important for complex electrical complexes and mechatronic modules.

One of the key advantages of Digital Twin technology is the ability to provide predictive maintenance. By analyzing data, a digital twin can predict when a system might fail and prevent an accident. This significantly reduces repair costs, increases equipment reliability, and minimizes downtime. In addition, a digital twin allows you to test new operating modes, simulate emergency situations, and optimize processes without interfering with the physical system.

Digital twin technology is actively used in manufacturing, energy, transportation, aviation, medicine, and robotics. In industry, Digital Twin is used to optimize robotic lines, control quality, and improve production process efficiency. In energy, digital twins help monitor the condition of turbines, transformers, and electric drives. In the transportation industry, they allow you to model loads, analyze the behavior of control systems, and improve safety.

For engineering education, a digital twin is a critically important technology. Future engineers must be able to work with data, create mathematical models, apply intelligent algorithms and build cyber-physical systems. That is why in the educational program “Engineering of Intelligent Electrical and Mechatronic Complexes” students study modeling in MATLAB/Simulink, data analysis in Python, intelligent control systems, digital and nonlinear control systems, technical diagnostics and creation of digital twins of electrical and mechatronic systems. This ensures the training of specialists who are able to work with Industry 4.0 technologies and implement modern solutions in production and energy.

A digital twin is not just an engineering tool, but a fundamental concept that combines the physical and digital worlds. It provides a deep understanding of the operation of systems, increases efficiency, reliability and safety, and also opens up new opportunities for the development of intelligent electrical and mechatronic complexes. That is why Digital Twin technology is one of the key areas of development of modern engineering and an important component of the training of students of our department.
