As part of the UNIDO Global Greenchem Innovation Network Programme (GGINP), the GreenChem Demo Day 2026 was held in Kyiv on September 16, marking the completion of the GreenChem 2026 accelerator programme.

The Demo Day provided an opportunity to present the results of this work to the professional community and potential partners.

Eleven teams presented their greentech and greenchem projects and solutions to the jury, answered questions from experts, and received professional feedback and recommendations for further development of their technologies.

PolyFuel — a modular, automated, energy-efficient technology for the pyrolysis of plastic waste that enables its conversion into gasoline components for both aviation and automotive applications, while also generating additional electricity — was developed by a team from the Department under the leadership of Professor Serhii Boychenko. The project won first place.

As the Demo Day winner, PolyFuel will participate in the Global Demo Day in Vienna in November 2026, which will take place as part of the UNIDO Circular Economy and Green Industry Week.

This recognition confirms the high technological and innovative potential of the development created by researchers from the Department of Automation of Electromechanical Complexes and Control Systems (AEMCCS), Educational and Scientific Institute of Energy and Electronics, Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.

The PolyFuel team expresses its sincere gratitude to the GGINP UNIDO organizers, mentors, and the academic and professional communities for their support, expert evaluation, and assistance in further improving the project.

The next stage is a major responsibility: bringing the technology to the international arena and moving toward its further implementation in the real economy.

The event took place at the Schneider Electric Innovation Hub in Kyiv and brought together representatives of industry, design organizations, higher education institutions, and professionals from the electrical engineering sector.

Throughout the day, participants became acquainted with Schneider Electric’s latest developments in the fields of automation, power supply systems, and the digitalization of energy infrastructure. Particular interest was generated by presentations focused on power quality monitoring solutions, the modern ETAP software package for power system design, large-scale energy storage systems, Microgrid technologies, and digital substation concepts.

Participants also had the opportunity to explore the company’s educational and demonstration stands, modern industrial automation equipment, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), and solutions for developing intelligent process control systems.

An important part of the seminar was the discussion of future prospects for the energy sector in the context of digital transformation, improved energy efficiency, and the integration of renewable energy sources. The information presented is particularly relevant to the educational and research activities of the department, as many of the showcased solutions align with current trends in the development of electromechanical and energy systems.

Participation in the seminar contributed to enhancing the professional awareness of both students and faculty members regarding modern technologies and equipment. It also provided an excellent opportunity to establish new professional contacts, exchange experience with industry representatives, and discuss prospects for further cooperation between the department and Schneider Electric.

The Department of AEMC expresses its gratitude to Schneider Electric for organizing this informative and valuable event, for its openness to cooperation with the academic community, and for its support of engineering education development in Ukraine.

These three days marked the culmination of four years of hard work, sleepless nights, practical research, and professional growth for our students. Despite the challenges of today, our future power engineers demonstrated a high level of knowledge, the relevance of their chosen research topics, and their readiness to address the complex challenges facing the modern energy sector.

The Examination Committee highlighted:

• The graduates’ strong theoretical background;
• The practical value of the presented projects, many of which focused on renewable energy and energy efficiency;
• The students’ confidence and well-reasoned responses during the defense.

What comes next?

New horizons await our graduates. Some will pursue professional careers and contribute to strengthening our country’s energy independence in industry and business, while others will continue their studies in Master’s programs and strive for new academic and scientific achievements.

The green chemistry startup presented by our team is “PolyFuel: Automated Plastic-to-Gasoline Technology.”

On May 7, participants had the opportunity to get acquainted with one another, present their projects, work on validating their ideas, and receive the first tools and guidance for further development of their solutions.

Ahead lie several months of mentoring, partnership building, and the transformation of innovative concepts into practical solutions for a sustainable future.

The Green Chemistry Accelerator is implemented within the framework of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) project “Global Green Chemistry Innovation and Network Programme (GreenChem)”, with financial support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The programme is implemented by the Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering at Yale University (USA), while the national implementing partner is the Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production Centre (RECPC).

The participants were welcomed by Professor Oksana Vovk, Director of the ES IEE. The plenary session was moderated by Professor Serhii Boichenko, Head of the Department of Automation of Electrical Engineering and Mechatronic Complexes. During the plenary session, warm words of remembrance and gratitude for Professor Chermalykh’s creative professional contribution and fruitful collaboration were expressed by:

• Oleh Sinchuk, Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Kryvyi Rih National University;
• Serhii Kovbasa, Head of the Department of Automation of Electromechanical Systems and Electric Drives, Faculty of Electric Power Engineering and Automatics, Igor Sikorsky KPI;
• Oleh Yurchenko, Head of the Department of Transistor Converters, Institute of Electrodynamics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine;
• Mykola Serhiienko, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Geoengineering, ES IEE.

The conference program featured more than 30 presentations, each addressing important issues related to automation and the improvement of energy efficiency.

Among the participants were representatives of Kryvyi Rih National University, the Institute of General Energy of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Mykhailo Ostrohradskyi Kremenchuk National University, the Institute of Electrodynamics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, as well as researchers and academic staff from the ES IEE, the Faculty of Electric Power Engineering and Automatics, and the Faculty of Chemical Technology of Igor Sikorsky KPI.

The sectional meetings were organized into three thematic areas:

• Renewable Energy, Hydrogen Technologies, and Energy Efficiency;
• Electric Drives, Electromechanical Systems, and Industrial Automation;
• Intelligent Control Systems, Automation, and Digital Technologies.

Engaging and up-to-date presentations delivered by Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students attracted considerable interest from both in-person and online audiences. The sessions were marked by lively professional discussions, constructive exchanges of ideas, and the identification of promising directions for future research and development.

The conference demonstrated that true synergy emerges when experienced stakeholders, professors, and students come together in one environment to discuss challenges and jointly seek solutions to pressing issues in the energy sector. It is precisely within such a collaborative and communicative atmosphere that the true value of academic and professional interaction is realized.

The newspaper “Kyiv Polytechnic” has published the article “The Scientific Heritage of Professor Valentyn Chermalyk”, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the prominent scientist, Professor of the Department of Automation of Electrotechnical and Mechatronic Complexes at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, Valentyn Mykolayovych Chermalyk.

The article highlights the main stages of the professor’s scientific and teaching activities, his contribution to the development of electric drive automation, microprocessor-based control systems, and the establishment of the department’s scientific school. It also includes memories shared by colleagues and students about his many years of work, organizational activities, and significant influence on the development of the electromechanical field in Ukraine.

The publication honors the memory of Professor V.M. Chermalyk and his outstanding scientific heritage, which remains relevant today for the advancement of modern automation and mechatronic systems.

The AEMC Department actively participated in the KPI Open Day at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, which this year brought together a large number of prospective students, their parents, and everyone planning to connect their future with engineering and technology.

📌 Throughout the day, we introduced our guests to our educational programs, research areas, and practical opportunities available for students. We spoke about modern energy systems, alternative energy, particularly bioenergy and hydrogen technologies, engineering solutions, and career prospects.

⚙️ Representatives of the AEMC Department together with student volunteers conducted tours of the laboratory facilities and consistently demonstrated that education is not only about theory, but also about real participation in projects, research, and the creation of innovations. We are shaping an educational environment where students develop personally, grow professionally, and become part of a strong professional community.

This distinction by Global 100 RE Ukraine is awarded annually to the most promising green transformation projects in Ukraine, with the ambitious goal that by 2070 all energy produced in Ukraine will come from renewable sources, including hydrogen as an ideal fuel and various types of biofuels.

📌 it trains engineers capable of designing and maintaining systems based on biofuels and hydrogen as alternative energy sources;
📌 it focuses on the biofuel and hydrogen sectors — areas currently experiencing the greatest workforce shortages;

ℹ️ Following the launch of the bachelor’s program in 2025, Kyiv Polytechnic is already preparing to introduce a master’s program in energy-efficient systems engineering.

The 100 gREen AWARD-2025 was not only an award ceremony but also a platform that brought together representatives of government authorities, local self-government, diplomatic institutions, international organizations, industry associations, educational institutions, the expert community, investors, and business. Such broad participation once again confirmed that green transformation in Ukraine has become a shared effort of communities, the state, the market, and international partners.
