The green chemistry startup presented by our team is “PolyFuel: Automated Plastic-to-Gasoline Technology.”

On May 7, participants had the opportunity to get acquainted with one another, present their projects, work on validating their ideas, and receive the first tools and guidance for further development of their solutions.

Ahead lie several months of mentoring, partnership building, and the transformation of innovative concepts into practical solutions for a sustainable future.

The Green Chemistry Accelerator is implemented within the framework of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) project “Global Green Chemistry Innovation and Network Programme (GreenChem)”, with financial support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The programme is implemented by the Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering at Yale University (USA), while the national implementing partner is the Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production Centre (RECPC).

The participants were welcomed by Professor Oksana Vovk, Director of the ES IEE. The plenary session was moderated by Professor Serhii Boichenko, Head of the Department of Automation of Electrical Engineering and Mechatronic Complexes. During the plenary session, warm words of remembrance and gratitude for Professor Chermalykh’s creative professional contribution and fruitful collaboration were expressed by:

• Oleh Sinchuk, Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Kryvyi Rih National University;
• Serhii Kovbasa, Head of the Department of Automation of Electromechanical Systems and Electric Drives, Faculty of Electric Power Engineering and Automatics, Igor Sikorsky KPI;
• Oleh Yurchenko, Head of the Department of Transistor Converters, Institute of Electrodynamics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine;
• Mykola Serhiienko, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Geoengineering, ES IEE.

The conference program featured more than 30 presentations, each addressing important issues related to automation and the improvement of energy efficiency.

Among the participants were representatives of Kryvyi Rih National University, the Institute of General Energy of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Mykhailo Ostrohradskyi Kremenchuk National University, the Institute of Electrodynamics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, as well as researchers and academic staff from the ES IEE, the Faculty of Electric Power Engineering and Automatics, and the Faculty of Chemical Technology of Igor Sikorsky KPI.

The sectional meetings were organized into three thematic areas:

• Renewable Energy, Hydrogen Technologies, and Energy Efficiency;
• Electric Drives, Electromechanical Systems, and Industrial Automation;
• Intelligent Control Systems, Automation, and Digital Technologies.

Engaging and up-to-date presentations delivered by Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students attracted considerable interest from both in-person and online audiences. The sessions were marked by lively professional discussions, constructive exchanges of ideas, and the identification of promising directions for future research and development.

The conference demonstrated that true synergy emerges when experienced stakeholders, professors, and students come together in one environment to discuss challenges and jointly seek solutions to pressing issues in the energy sector. It is precisely within such a collaborative and communicative atmosphere that the true value of academic and professional interaction is realized.

The newspaper “Kyiv Polytechnic” has published the article “The Scientific Heritage of Professor Valentyn Chermalyk”, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the prominent scientist, Professor of the Department of Automation of Electrotechnical and Mechatronic Complexes at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, Valentyn Mykolayovych Chermalyk.

The article highlights the main stages of the professor’s scientific and teaching activities, his contribution to the development of electric drive automation, microprocessor-based control systems, and the establishment of the department’s scientific school. It also includes memories shared by colleagues and students about his many years of work, organizational activities, and significant influence on the development of the electromechanical field in Ukraine.

The publication honors the memory of Professor V.M. Chermalyk and his outstanding scientific heritage, which remains relevant today for the advancement of modern automation and mechatronic systems.

The AEMC Department actively participated in the KPI Open Day at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, which this year brought together a large number of prospective students, their parents, and everyone planning to connect their future with engineering and technology.

📌 Throughout the day, we introduced our guests to our educational programs, research areas, and practical opportunities available for students. We spoke about modern energy systems, alternative energy, particularly bioenergy and hydrogen technologies, engineering solutions, and career prospects.

⚙️ Representatives of the AEMC Department together with student volunteers conducted tours of the laboratory facilities and consistently demonstrated that education is not only about theory, but also about real participation in projects, research, and the creation of innovations. We are shaping an educational environment where students develop personally, grow professionally, and become part of a strong professional community.

This distinction by Global 100 RE Ukraine is awarded annually to the most promising green transformation projects in Ukraine, with the ambitious goal that by 2070 all energy produced in Ukraine will come from renewable sources, including hydrogen as an ideal fuel and various types of biofuels.

📃 What makes this program unique:
📌 it trains engineers capable of designing and maintaining systems based on biofuels and hydrogen as alternative energy sources;
📌 it focuses on the biofuel and hydrogen sectors — areas currently experiencing the greatest workforce shortages;

ℹ️ Following the launch of the bachelor’s program in 2025, Kyiv Polytechnic is already preparing to introduce a master’s program in energy-efficient systems engineering.

The 100 gREen AWARD-2025 was not only an award ceremony but also a platform that brought together representatives of government authorities, local self-government, diplomatic institutions, international organizations, industry associations, educational institutions, the expert community, investors, and business. Such broad participation once again confirmed that green transformation in Ukraine has become a shared effort of communities, the state, the market, and international partners.

The program of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute has become a contribution to training a new generation of specialists in bioenergy and hydrogen technologies.

ES Institute of Energy Saving and Energy Management (IEE) is a division of one of the largest universities in Ukraine and Europe – National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”. There are 4 departments in the IEE:

• Power Supply Department
• Department of Automation of Electrical and Mechatronic Complexes
• Department of Geo-Engineering
• Department of Labor Protection,Industrial and Civil Safety

and also:

• Training Center for Energy Management 
• Research Center for Energy-Saving Pulse-Wave Structures and Technologies of Educational Systems
• Educational and Scientific Laboratory of Resource and Energy Conservation
• Educational and Scientific Laboratory “Laboratory of Thermomolecular Energetics”

The event, organized by the branch “KhNPP,” brought together representatives of leading higher education institutions in Ukraine to help Netishyn’s high school students take one of their first informed steps in choosing a career path.

Students of grades 10–11 from the Netishyn Academic Lyceum took part in the meeting.

The event began with a presentation by Volodymyr Hudz, Deputy General Director of the “KhNPP” branch of Energoatom, who spoke about the opportunities, prospects, and the role of nuclear energy today.

Addressing the youth, he said: “You are facing an important choice for your future. I hope you will choose technical education, become part of the Khmelnytskyi NPP team—and very soon we will be calling each other colleagues.”

This was followed by direct communication with representatives of higher education institutions.

The event featured representatives from Vinnytsia National Technical University, Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, Odesa Polytechnic National University, Ternopil Ivan Puluj National Technical University, National University of Water and Environmental Engineering, and Khmelnytskyi National University.

The universities presented their academic programs and provided information on admission requirements, study conditions, and future employment opportunities. The focus was on electric power engineering, nuclear energy, automation, IT, and chemical technologies—fields that form the backbone of a stable energy system.

In an “open microphone” format, participants engaged in informal discussions, asking real questions about admission, studies, and practical career prospects.

Such career guidance events contribute to a more informed career choice among young people and help build the human resource potential necessary for the development of Ukraine’s energy sector.

The researchers reengineered the architecture of hydrogen fuel cells, eliminating a key issue—water accumulation, which previously hindered oxygen flow and reduced system efficiency.

Traditionally, removing the reaction byproduct—water—required complex and energy-intensive solutions that increased the weight and cost of the systems. Australian scientists applied high-precision microengineering approaches by integrating microchannels 100 micrometers (0.1 mm) wide into the cell structure, separated by ribs of the same size. These “bypass channels” enable efficient removal of excess water and gases, preventing their buildup inside.

The results, published in the journal Applied Catalysis B: Environment and Energy, demonstrate a significant improvement: the upgraded fuel cell delivers 75% more power compared to conventional designs. At the same time, the structure has become lighter and more cost-effective, as it relies less on expensive platinum and no longer requires additional pumps or separators.

According to the authors, this technology opens up prospects for implementing hydrogen energy in sectors where battery systems are inefficient due to their weight. The primary focus is on aviation, particularly low-altitude aircraft, as well as heavy-duty transport.

The development has already been patented, and the team is currently working on scaling the technology for industrial production, bringing the era of affordable and completely clean energy closer.
